Rio de Janeiro State Governor supports World Congress of Architects

01/25/2020

A ceremony at the Guanabara Palace on Friday evening, January 24, offered a warm welcome to International Union of Architects (UIA) Board Members, and confirmed the support of the Rio de Janeiro State Government for the 27th World Congress of Architects.

Governor Wilson Witzel commented on the main problem facing Rio and other Brazilian states: living conditions in their favelas. Announcing a project for Rocinha (rated as the largest slum in Latin America) that was prepared with the Rio Metropolis Institute, he added that he was eager to hear from the architects so that we can seek solutions together to so many urban challenges. “I think that the World Congress will be a great moment. The Rio State Government welcomes you with open arms and you can count on us for whatever you need," said Governor Witzel.

The UIA Board travelled to Rio for its biannual meeting, which began on Friday, January 24 and continued on into the next day. Its Members seized the opportunity to tour the venue of the World Congress of Architects, and celebrated the Sunday launch of the centennial year of the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB).
